Crew Leader Of The Month . . .

(Al) Alan J. Wormer

Al was born in Oneonta, NY on July 27, 1945. He attended elementary school in Altamont NY, junior high in Farmington MI & graduated High School in Pearl River, NY.   In 1967 he graduated from Hartwick College, Oneonta NY with a degree in business administration. When asked why he chose business administration, Al replied “Since I wasn’t going to be a doctor, lawyer, or Indian Chief……I went for the next best $ thing.”     

Al followed in the footsteps of his father and joined the US Navy in 1967. He served as a Supply Officer aboard the USS Rigel, a cargo ship that supplied groceries  to aircraft carriers and destroyers on station in the Mediterranean.  After completing his active duty enlistment, Al continued serving in the US Navy Reserve where he retired as Lieutenant Commander in 1991.

Some of the many hobbies Al enjoys involve motorcycles, boats & old muscle cars and he occasionally pedals a few miles on his bicycle.  He enjoys spectator sports, especially football and is developing an interest in Kentucky basketball.    

Al has three married children, Steve, Leslie, and Brad, who live in the Franklin area.  Last July, he was blessed to become a grandfather for the first time.

From 1970 to 1986, Al worked for The Aetna Casualty and Surety Company in their surety bond division.  He worked 5 years in the Richmond, VA office, 5 years in the Little Rock, AR office, and 5 years in the Kansas City, MO office before transferring to Nashville. In 1986, Al changed career paths to the retail side of the surety bond business and went to work for Willis. Until his retirement in May 2008, Al enjoyed his work at Willis where he specialized in obtaining and handling the surety bond requirements for major clients located throughout the United States.

Al attends Franklin’s Rolling Hills Community Church.  He gives a significant amount of his time to serving his community, most of which is in his service with Habitat For Humanity of Williamson County.  He began volunteering with Habitat in November 2008 and has served in assisting 12 partner families realize their lifelong dreams of achieving home ownership. Al says his favorite part of the Habitat volunteer experience is the wonderful feeling from working and building with good people for the purpose of helping others.
